An accurate determination of the Vitamin C content of urine in cases of suspected deficiency, or following the administration of a test dose, can be made within a few minutes by the use of compressed tablets, each containing an accurately standardized quantity of 2,6-dichloro phenolindophenol.
Dichlorophenolindophenol tablets contain an amount of the indicator which is reduced to its colourless form by 1 mg of Vitamin C (20 international units); that is to say 1 mg of Vitamin C is just sufficient to decolourise a solution containing one tablet.
